civic engagement

Secondary Title

"Our involvement in political systems is rooted in the Gospel imperative to love our neighbors, to do justice, and to care for the vulnerable. As United Methodists, we acknowledge that love requires responsible political action and engagement aimed at the betterment of society and the promotion of the common good. We acknowledge that such political engagement demands humility and mindfulness of our own complicity in perpetuating injustice. It also necessitates compassion, prayer, and a willingness to discern God’s guidance.

Taking an active stance in society is nothing new for followers of John Wesley. He set the example for us to combine personal and social piety. Ever since predecessor churches to United Methodism flourished in the United States, we have been known as a denomination involved with people’s lives, with political and social struggles, having local to international mission implications. Such involvement is an expression of the personal change we experience in our baptism and conversion.”

vote local

City Councils are a highly important but often overlooked governing body that identifies service and project priorities for the community such as affordable housing, zoning regulations, and road pavement.

Local School Boards develop the annual budget to run the school system, hire and evaluate the superintendent, and set school policies such as history curriculum and what books school libraries can stock.

Local election winners are sometimes determined by less than 100 votes! Don’t give your power to someone who may not have the same priorities as you do but who makes the time to vote.
